| Basically, recording tape voices is nothing unusual - in fact it's
like a normal recording:
A microphone is connected (optimally via a microphone pre-amplifier) to a cassette recorder and the recording is started (microphone method). Optionally a low background noise may be played back during the recording which is used by the originators of the voices as a "raw material" to form the messages. This could for instance be a radio set which is tuned to a foreign-language radio station (radio method), or "preserved sound", i.e. a prefabricated tape with various noises on it, e.g. a foreign language speaker or reversed speech (conserve method), or the noise of rippling water from a fountain (water method). Some experimenters also use a language similar noise made by a computer artificially (speech synthesis method). The swept-frequency method represents an extension of radio method. The Psychophon by Franz Seidl uses a combination of several recording methods at the same time. |

| The phenomena described in this article, purported high-tech
communications from
beyond the grave, may seem too preposterous to be taken seriously. I will readily admit that the data are highly controversial, both as regards their existence and their interpretation. We have been following this work for a number of years, and for a long time felt that it did not merit reporting in the Noetic Sciences Review. That we now reverse our policy and tell the story comes about because of several factors: (1) The data continue to accumulate. At recent conferences for

sounds on audio tape. Anyone can do this. Simply leave a tape recorder in room, graveyard, or anywhere. You can also walk around with it and ask questions. Always use a new/unused cassette tape. The voices cannot be heard at that moment by ear, only when the tape is played back. You may be surprised at your results. The EVPs you are about to hear have not been altered in anyway and were not spoken by the investigators or any living person. |

recordings of paranormal tape voices, also known as "Electronic Voice Phenomena" (EVP), using the means of random controlled phoneme synthesis. EVP are recordings of utterances upon sound recording media (recorder tapes, cassettes, video tapes, etc.) which are physically unexplainable. These voices are often reasonable messages replying to corresponding questions, or they are referring to circumstances concerning the experimenter. More information about this topic can be found on the Web site of VTF, the German Association For Transcommunication Research or AA-EVP, the American Association Electronic Voice Phenomena. |

| Some people find it preferable to record at the same time each evening, when
all is quiet.Attach the external microphone to the tape recorder or computer.
Position the external microphone near the source of white noise(optional)
but not too
Turn on your recording mechanism. It helps if you clear your throat and say a little something(politely) like,"Hello! My name is_______.I am conducting an experiment to prove that there is life after death. It's called E.V.P. and I believe that I can record spirit voices. No demons or hostile entities are invited-they should stay away! Good ,kind spirits, please say something! Can you tell me your name? Speak loudly into this microphone or even shout....Thank you." Then record for about 10-20 minutes. While you are recording do not whisper or mumble or you may mistake it for an e.v.p. Make notes of passing cars, barking dogs, cold spots or unusual feelings, etc. Also make notes of any questions asked, date, time, etc. Stop the recorder and review the tape as loud as possible with headphones
and edit, combing through for any possible e.v.p's.
Here are some helpful computer programs to edit with: Many e.v.p. recording investigators swear by "Cool Edit".(It's easy to get free trails-just type their name in a search engine...) "Loop Recorder" is great to record with because it's easy to see the waveform and save clips."GoldWave" is my favorite to do any further editing ,such as maximize, noise reduction and reverse, since it's so easy to use. After isolating the evp, always try reversing the clips.Sometimes the
messages are backwards and, furthermore, there are occasions when they say
one thing forward and another thing backwards

You should use a BLANK, never before used audio tape (high Bias is best) Record while walking through the areas that you think would have some kind of activity. If you must talk, do it in whispers. Some voices of spirits or entities are very close to the background level of static. Others may be clearly heard. If the speech is difficult to understand, remember that the spirit talking may be talking in a language or dialog that is not in common usage today. The voice can also be in reverse, you would need a computer to reverse this to hear it. |

development for the ghost hunting community since 1996. Today, many ghost clubs include EVP on their web sites. Electronic Voice Phenomena is a process whereby the voice or voices of the dead are embedded onto magnetic recording tape by a process that we do not understand. The embedded "ghost" voice can be heard when the magnetic audio tape is played back on a tape recorder/player. Some have success with digital recorders, but beware of digital static. Ghost voices are clear and do not sound like static. Some voices are at the threshold of sound. An appropriate place to begin recording Ghostly Voices would be old cemeteries at night The same protocol must be observed as for ghost photography in cemeteries. Any kind of tape recorder will work. The tape recorder should run for about 30 minutes. Any talking should be in normal voices. Some voices of the dead are very close to the background level of static. Others may be clearly discernable. If the speech is difficult to understand, remember that the spirit talking may be talking in a language or dialog that is not in common usage today. If you want to enhance the EVP recording try using CoolEdit96 shareware program by Syntrillium Software Corporation, Phoenix, AZ. |

not heard during the recording. It could be the sound of a ghost picked up by the recorder that was simply too high of a frequency for the ear to hear. The best way to do it is to ask for a message and sit unmoving near the tape recorder for about 5 min. Sometimes it takes a while to get anything tocome through. You can do this anywhere, but you will want to do it somewhere it is quiet so not to pick up a lot of background noise. I presently only have one example of an evp file. If you have any please send them to me. It was inadvertently recorded in an old church in downtown Baltimore during an audition. It was submitted to me by JKC. You can also listen to it slowed down in reverse. It seems to make more sense that way. |
